WUNC's Holiday Specials 2016

WUNC presents a number of holiday specials during December 2016 and the start of 2017.

Some of our regular shows will also have special features during this time including Back Porch Music.

Here's a look at what you'll hear during December:

Saturday DEC 10

3 PM – Sound Opinions
Reviews the best albums of the year

Saturday DEC 17

3 PM - Sound Opinions Holiday Special
Jim and Greg present a “Christmas Spectacular” full of musical surprises, presents to unwrap and just the right amount of kitch.

4 PM - The Dinner Party Download Holiday Special

This November-December, we're making a special episode of The Dinner Party Download stuffed with holiday goodness. You'll hear: A Yuletide playlist; etiquette tips to save you from a work party snafu (or maybe create a memorable one?); a little-known chestnut of holiday history; conversations with special guests both nice and (delightfully) naughty; and lots more! Featuring good cheer, comic relief, and a tipple or two, the episode's a perfect companion to the hectic and happy holiday season.

6 PM - Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites

This program features stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas. David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk -- these and other NPR voices, past and present, tell stories of the season. Hosted by Lynn Neary

7 PM - The Moth Holiday Special 2016: Unexpected Gifts of December

A special Holiday Hour from The Moth. The unexpected gifts of December: holiday customs, brand new traditions, flying cows, fruit, luminaries and a magical forest. Hosted by The Moth’s Executive Producer, Sarah Austin Jenness. The Moth Radio Hour is produced by The Moth and Jay Allison of Atlantic Public Media.

9 PM – Occasional Shivers
A brand-new holiday special for 2016.  Hosted by Branford Marsalis.   Set in 1960s Manhattan, this radio drama is composed by Southern-pop icon Chris Stamey.  With music, song and dialogue, the hour-long piece tells the story of two young lovers who meet at a pair of Christmas parties.  The music is newly composed, but sounds straight-up torch song, in the tradition of the Great American Songbook. Featured performers include Nneena Freelon (singing the title song), Marshall Crenshaw, Walker Harrison, WUNC’s Eric Hodge, Don Dixon, Millie McGuire, Kirsten Lambert, Django Haskins, Skylar Gudasz, Marti Jones and an all-star band that includes jazz greats Scott Sawyer, Will Campbell, John Brown and Bill Frisell.  It is by turns a playful and bittersweet show that will sound thoroughly rooted in the season but does so with all-original music, giving Frosty, Jingle Bells and Rudolph a rest.  The program is produced by Chris Stamey and WUNC for national distribution by American Public Media.

Friday DEC 23
