Thousands Graduating This Weekend

Thousands of graduating seniors will get their degrees this weekend. The three largest universities in the Triangle: Duke, NC State, and UNC Chapel Hill, all hold commencement ceremonies.

Dave DeWitt: Last-minute preparations are ongoing for the big events, including building stages, arranging chairs, and families checking into hotel rooms.

But for those graduating, like Mohammad Saad at UNC Chapel Hill, these last few days elicit conflicting emotions.

Science Experiment Sheds Light On Planet Orbits

That's the sound of a penny rolling round and round in a device called a gravity funnel. This was recorded at the Natural Science Center in Greensboro using WUNC's Make Radio iPhone app. It's part of a collaboration with the North Carolina Science Festival. You've likely seen this game, the coin launches from the top of a big round funnel and then spins, on edge, down to the collection jar underneath the hole at the bottom of the cone.

President Obama Talks Student Loan Debt At UNC

President Obama brought his message of affordable education for all to the Tar Heel State as part of a day-long college tour.

Gurnal Scott: University of North Carolina juniors Maria Rodriguez, Emalyn Penn and Mariella Albarado sat together at UNC's Carmichael Arena hoping for specific words to come from the President.

Maria Rodriguez: I want to hear him say that there are going to be cheap student loans. That's exactly what I want to hear him say.

UNC Employees May See Change

A possible change to how university employees are classified has the UNC system and employee rights groups bickering.

Dave DeWitt: About 22,000 employees who work on the UNC system’s 17 campuses are classified in one of two categories. EPA employees are exempt from the state personnel act, SPA employees are not.

The UNC Board of Governors wants to streamline, and create one category. They say it will allow more local control and create a system that rewards the best employees and allows universities more flexibility in recruitment.
