Gov. Pat McCrory on Wednesday nominated a 30-year veteran of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to head the State Bureau of Investigation, seeking to fill the position after the former director abruptly resigned early this year.

Forsyth Co. School District Fails To Report Possible Crimes

Following a two-year investigation by the SBI, the Forsyth County district attorney says it appears that about 20 possible crimes were not reported by local school officials to law enforcement. D.A. Jim O'Neill called on the State to examine reporting practices by the school district. The investigation turned up about 20 cases that were eventually prosecuted but not properly reported. The district maintains the lack of reporting was a misinterpretation of the law and not malicious.

State Senate Budget Plan Ups Medicaid Spending, Moves SBI

Lawmakers in the State Senate have presented a $20.6 billion budget proposal. It would spend slightly less than Governor McCrory’s plan and offers no raises for state employees.  The plan would also increase state Medicaid spending by about $300 million and make big changes to the State Bureau of Investigation.
 
Republican budget writer Senator Pete Brunstetter told reporters earlier today that he knows this is a tough budget plan. He says its purpose is to make sure the state lives within its means.

State Attorney General Disturbed By Increasing Domestic Violence Deaths

State Attorney General Roy Cooper says he's concerned about an increase in domestic violence deaths in North Carolina last year. 

State law requires police agencies to report domestic violence deaths to the SBI.  Cooper says the 122 deaths last year are 16 more than in 2011.  He called the increase "disturbing" and urged the state to do more to stop these crimes before they happen. Wake County had the highest number of domestic violence deaths at 11, followed by Mecklenburg and Guilford counties with eight and six respectively. 

Meth Lab Busts Jump 34% in 2012, Sets New State Record

There were 460 meth lab busts in the state last year. That's a record high. It's up from 344 busts the year before. State Bureau of Investigation agents attribute the rise to an increase in a simpler method of making the drug called "one-pot" or "shake and bake." Criminals cook the meth in a plastic soda bottle - using much smaller levels of the main ingredient, pseudo-ephedrine - commonly found in cold medicine.

Appeals Court Reverses Decision In Case With Mishandled Evidence

The State Court of Appeals has reversed a Durham judge's decision to dismiss murder charges in a case involving claims of mishandled evidence.

In a decision released earlier today, Appeals Court Judge Sam Ervin says Durham Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson erred by dismissing charges against Derrick Allen. The court has ordered new hearings. Allen was accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter in 1998.

Nyang'Oro Will Be Investigated By SBI

The Orange County District Attorney has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into the activities of a UNC-Chapel Hill professor. Julius Nyang'Oro is accused of being paid for classes he did not teach.
