NC Unemployment Is High And Long-Lasting

The NC Policy Watch Report says "long-term unemployment impacts workers' lifetime earnings, families and the economy."

The latest numbers show there are about 418,000 unemployed people across North Carolina this Labor Day.  And many of them have been jobless for a long time.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate is 8.9%, one of the highest in the country and higher than the national rate.  The state has held this designation for much of the so-called economic recovery.

Mekael Teshome is an Economist with PNC Financial.  He says we have to remember, between 2007 and 2010, unemployment rose by 100% nationally but by nearly 150% in North Carolina.

Survey Predicts Slow Growth For NC Businesses

Small business owners in North Carolina are more optimistic about their companies, but hiring remains stagnant.  A survey released yesterday from PNC Financial says nearly 30 percent of North Carolina businesses report that they are optimistic about their prospects for the next six months.  That's up from 15 percent last fall.  But PNC economist Mekael Teshome says the state's business outlook reflects the slow growth nationwide.

Rocky Mount Exhibit Honors Banking History

One of the biggest banks in North Carolina is PNC. The bank was introduced to the state after its acquisition of RBC last year.  These banking institutions have roots that reach back to Rocky Mount.  And that’s where a new exhibit honors the region’s rich banking history.

The PNC Legacy Project is the first exhibit you see when you walk into the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences in Rocky Mount.  David Combs is the Mayor of Rocky Mount.  He was born and bred here.

Raleigh Metro Shines in Economic Recovery

The latest unemployment numbers released by the North Carolina Department of Commerce show an increase in most of the state's 100 counties. And when you cross county lines and combine cities into metro areas, the jobless rate still seems to be on the rise again. But there is one area of the state that continues to out-perform all others, the Raleigh - Cary metropolitan area.

PNC Invests $1 Million In Education, Economic Development

PNC is investing a million dollars in North Carolina to spur the economy and boost preschool education.

Asma Khalid: The Pittsburgh-based bank is collaborating with Wake County Public Schools, Carolina Ballet and the North Carolina Museum of Art to introduce low-income students to the arts.

Wake County Superintendent Tony Tata welcomes the PNC initiative.

PNC Puts Name On Arena

The last remnant of RBC Bank in the Triangle was removed earlier today. Governor Bev Perdue and others officially renamed the RBC Center the PNC Arena at a ceremony in Raleigh.

Dave DeWitt: Today, PNC officials and Governor Perdue were all smiles as the very last RBC sign came down, and a PNC Arena logo took its place. But tomorrow, the company is expected to start laying off employees in Raleigh and Rocky Mount – perhaps more than 600.

Governor Perdue says the job losses are a temporary setback.

RBC Center To Become PNC Arena

Raleigh’s largest sports and indoor concert venue is getting a new name. The RBC Center will be called the PNC Arena.

Like dozens of arena renamings before it, this one comes because of a corporate takeover. Pittsburgh-based PNC Financial Services bought Canadian-based RBC Bank for $3.45 billion back in June. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.
