This could have implications for aging and injured brains and how they are able to vet advertising for falsehoods. Thousands Graduating This Weekend

Thousands of graduating seniors will get their degrees this weekend. The three largest universities in the Triangle: Duke, NC State, and UNC Chapel Hill, all hold commencement ceremonies.

Dave DeWitt: Last-minute preparations are ongoing for the big events, including building stages, arranging chairs, and families checking into hotel rooms.

But for those graduating, like Mohammad Saad at UNC Chapel Hill, these last few days elicit conflicting emotions.

Carolina & NC State Head to Sweet Sixteen

North Carolina and NC State return to action tonight in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The Tar Heels take on Ohio with all eyes on the point guard. Coach Roy Williams says freshman Stilman White will likely start for the injured Kendall Marshall.

Roy Williams: Stilman, yeah, he really is - he's the guy that's gonna play. Stillman and Jay Watts. As long as their heart's not beating so fast that they pass out before they get to the court, I think we'll still have five guys out there starting.

Heels and Pack head to the Sweet 16

UNC and NC State are moving on to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's basketball Tournament. But the news isn't all good.

Jeff Tiberii: Moments after UNC's convincing 87-73 win against Creighton in the Round of 32, Dennis Marshall stood three rows behind the Tar Heel bench with a look of grave concern. His son, Kendall has just scored 18 points and dished out 11 assists. But dad had noticed Kendall hadn't touched the ball with his right hand for the last 10 minutes of the game, after being fouled hard. Moments later Roy Williams confirmed dad's fears:

Building A Smarter Grid In Raleigh

A major center for Smart Grid technology will be dedicated today in Raleigh.

Dave DeWitt: Engineers, faculty, and political leaders say the Triangle is fast becoming the east coast’s “Smart Grid Valley.” The comparison to Silicon Valley comes a little closer to reality today, when the first-ever demonstration center and testing lab for electric utilities in the nation is dedicated on N.C. State’s Centennial Campus.

North Carolina’s workforce continues to evolve as the economy evolves and digs its way out of the last recession.  The Institute for Emerging Issues at N-C State says in order to continue this positive trend, it is imperative for the state to begin strategically investing in Generation “Z.”  Most of the young people making up Generation “Z” were born in the 1990s and are approaching college age. Even though this group is the nation’s most diverse and most technologically savvy, how will they fit into the workplace of the future?

Wolfpack In Charlotte For Bowl

NC State football fans are making their way to Charlotte today. The Wolfpack is playing Louisville in the Belk Bowl.

This has been a challenging and triumphant year to be an NC State football fan. Coach Tom O’Brien says that especially early in the season, things didn’t look good.

Tom O'Brien: "Certainly we’re excited about the opportunity to continue our season. At a point 7 games ago we didn’t look like we’d be on anyone’s radar."

Scientists Using Web Donations to Fund Projects

Scientists are using the Internet to raise money for their projects.

Scientists are used to relying on grants for funding, and that's not likely to change anytime soon. But a recent trend called "crowd-sourcing" could help small projects get underway. It's basically a kick starter campaign where the general public gives online donations for scientists' research. North Carolina State chemistry professor Walter Weare was able to pay for new equipment for his solar energy research using the method.
