Michelle Obama Visits North Carolina

First lady Michelle Obama was in Durham and Greenville yesterday to help get out the vote for her husband. With less than two months to go before election day, polls show the race is close between President Obama and his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney. Jessica Jones reports the Obama campaign is hoping younger voters will help the president win North Carolina a second time.

New Mortgage Settlement Oversight Board

A former North Carolina governor is one of five people selected to serve on the board overseeing the national mortgage settlement.

Leoneda Inge: James Holshouser is joined by Keith Pigues (pig-gees), Dean of the School of Business at North Carolina Central University and Bonnie Hancock, with the N-C State Poole College of Management. Joseph Smith is national mortgage settlement monitor and former North Carolina Commissioner of Banks. He says the oversight office is like a small company.

The Life & Legacy of LeRoy T. Walker

Coach, educator and activist LeRoy T. Walker spent his career breaking the color barrier. He was the first African-American coach of a U.S. Olympic Track Team, the first black president of the United States Olympic Committee and the man who, along with Duke University coach Al Buehler, united the races around the sport of track and field in Durham, NC.

NCCU Quiz Bowl

Quiz bowl is a competition of knowledge. The players train with the devotion of athletes, but they answer questions, rather than make baskets or score touchdowns. The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a quiz bowl circuit specifically for historically black colleges and universities, and North Carolina Central University has one of the best teams.

Young adults came out in droves to support President Barack Obama in 2008. But early poll numbers show the youth vote is not as strong this time around. To help get young voters to the polls, the Obama re-election campaign hosted a national HBCU Student Summit last night at North Carolina Central University in Durham. The “Greater Together” initiative uses social media to try to get young voters to volunteer and register to vote.

Graduations On Tap For Weekend

Another wave of students is set to graduate from area colleges and universities this weekend. Commencement ceremonies will be held at North Carolina Central, Duke, and NC State. 

Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis will give the commencement address at NC Central on Saturday. Across town and a day later, Duke will hold its graduation. Cisco CEO John Chambers will speak to the Duke graduates.
