Old Dominion vs. NC State 6 PM

North Carolina State football will host Old Dominion University this weekend in Raleigh. It's the second home game for the Wolfpack this season, after barely scraping by for a win against Georgia Southern last week. This year is Old Dominion's first season as part of Conference USA, and they're led by senior Quarterback, Taylor Heinicke. Wolfpack Coach Dave Doeren  thinks Heinicke is a big threat.

The UNC football team meets Cincinnati Saturday at the Belk Bowl in Charlotte.  For a while this fall it looked like the Tar Heels would be home for the holidays. Carolina started the season with one win and five losses. The 5th defeat came by just four points at home to 10th ranked Miami.

Vinatavious Cooper rushed for a career-best 198 yards, setting a Beef `O' Brady's Bowl record and leading East Carolina to a 37-20 victory over Ohio on Monday. The Pirates (10-3) grabbed the lead for good on the first of Cooper's two touchdowns runs in the fourth quarter, a 31-yard burst with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Number 24 Duke and North Carolina are getting ready for their annual football rivalry matchup.

The Tar Heels host the Blue Devils on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.  There's a lot at stake for Duke, which needs the win to advance to the ACC championship game against Florida State.  It would be the school's first trip to the title game.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe says it's fitting that the deciding game is against UNC.

"It's enough that it's just Duke and North Carolina," Cutcliffe says.

The UNC football team faces off this weekend against in-state rival East Carolina.  North Carolina has won 12 of 15 all-time games against the Pirates from Greenville, but that won't dampen the pride that each squad will bring into the game at Chapel Hill.  Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora says the game puts old friends and foes back on the same field.

The NC State Wolfpack will take the field tonight for their biggest game of the season to date. The Clemson Tigers are third-ranked in the national polls and an early contender for the national championship.

The football coach recently fired by N.C. Central is making an appeal to get his job back. Henry Frazier, III says he was wrongly terminated.

Frazier says his second arrest in two years came after he tried to inform his ex-wife that he would be paying a parking ticket on their car. Frazier was suspended last year after being arrested for spousal abuse and was subjected to an order of protection.

Former UNC-Chapel Hill football player Marvin Austin said in documents unsealed today in Wake County Superior Court that a player agent, Terry Shawn Watson from Georgia, paid him several thousand dollars cash. The money came to Austin in a Fed-Ex package while he was a player at Carolina in 2010.

Other payments were sent to the home of Jennifer Wiley. She was the tutor who was at the center of an academic fraud scandal that came out of the investigation into the football program.

In college football, NC State plays Vanderbilt today in the Music City Bowl.

The Wolfpack entered the season with hopes of an ACC championship, but posted just a seven and five record, resulting in the firing of head coach Tom O'Brien. New coach Dave Doeren won't lead State in this game. That job goes to offensive coordinator Dana Bible. The interim coach says today is both a challenge and a building block.

Duke's football team is playing in a bowl game for the first time in 18 seasons. The Blue Devils meet Cincinnati tomorrow evening in Charlotte.

Duke hasn't been to college football's version of the post-season since 1994, and they haven't won a bowl game since New Year's Day 1961. That Blue Devil squad beat Arkansas 7-6. Head coach David Cutcliffe says:

"I want them to feel a sense of history as they play here because the history does indicate some tough times, but it also represents the best of the best."

Winston-Salem State University is playing in the Division II football national championship tomorrow against Georgia's Valdosta State.

Winston-Salem State had been transitioning to Division I athletics, but the school did an about face two years ago because the move was too costly. Some supporters were upset that the Rams wouldn't become a Division I member. Head Coach Connell Mayor says his undefeated football team has provided a solution.

Sports Roundup

Dec 5, 2012

North Carolina State University has a new football coach, and the Charlotte Bobcats are winning games. It's been a busy few weeks in the sports world across North Carolina. WUNC's Dave DeWitt joins host Frank Stasio to discuss the many changes, and the stories behind the sports headlines.

Just a year after an NCAA investigation into improper academic and financial benefits for members of the University of North Carolina’s football team, the school is under suspicion of academic fraud again. The first scandal resulted in the firing of Coach Butch Davis and the accelerated retirement of Athletic Director Dick Baddour. The latest probe involves student athletes and UNC’s Afro-American Studies program. WUNC Education Reporter Dave DeWitt joins host Frank Stasio for a look at the latest trouble brewing for UNC athletics.

North Carolina State University is the destination for the first football player to transfer from Penn State.

Lawyers representing several media outlets and UNC-Chapel Hill argued today over what constitutes a public document. At the center of the case are the personal cell phone records of former football coach Butch Davis. Dave DeWitt reports.

Dave DeWitt: The media outlets contend that Davis was acting as a public official when he conducted the business of managing the UNC-Chapel Hill football program over his personal cell phone. Their attorneys argued today that that means those records should be public.

The UNC Football team has been banned from participating in the post-season this fall.

Jeff Tiberii: North Carolina’s football team will also lose five scholarships in each of the next three seasons, and be on probation until 2015. The NCAA announced the punishments Monday following a report by the Division 1 Committee on Infractions. Violations took between 2008 and 2010 and include academic fraud, payments to players. Britton Banowsky is chair of the Committee on Infractions.

NC State football fans are making their way to Charlotte today. The Wolfpack is playing Louisville in the Belk Bowl.

This has been a challenging and triumphant year to be an NC State football fan. Coach Tom O’Brien says that especially early in the season, things didn’t look good.

Tom O'Brien: "Certainly we’re excited about the opportunity to continue our season. At a point 7 games ago we didn’t look like we’d be on anyone’s radar."

UNC Goes Bowling Today

Dec 26, 2011

North Carolina will play in its 4th consecutive bowl game later today. The Tar Heels take on Missouri in the Independence Bowl.

The last 18 months have seen major changes to North Carolina’s football program. And the state of transition will last one more game, as interim coach Everett Withers coaches the team despite the hiring of a new head coach.

Larry Fedora was chosen to lead the program, but Withers will coach the team at the Independence Bowl. Withers was a candidate for the permanent job, but didn’t get it.

UNC Faces The NCAA

Oct 28, 2011

UNC-Chapel Hill officials are in Indianapolis this morning. They are there to face the NC-double-A infractions committee over improper activities in the football program.

Chancellor Holden Thorp and outgoing athletic director Dick Baddour hope to convince the committee to accept the punishment the University has already given itself. Those penalties include vacating all wins in the 2008 and 2009 season, losing nine football scholarships and a 50-thousand dollar fine.

North Carolina will vacate all 16 victories from the 2008 and 2009 football seasons following an NCAA investigation into improper benefits and academic misconduct. The university issued a response Monday to the NCAA's notice of allegations. It says three scholarships will be cut for the next three years and the football program will be on probation for the next two years as part of self-imposed penalties. UNC will pay a $50,000 fine, but did not impose a postseason ban. The school still has to appear before the NCAA infractions committee in October.

ACC Football Kicks Off

Sep 2, 2011

College football fans will be flocking to Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh this weekend. UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, and N-C State will hold their season opening games.

It’s been a tumultuous off-season for major college football programs. And no program has been under more scrutiny than Carolina, for everything from parking tickets to academic integrity issues.

Tomorrow, the team finally takes the field. Everett Withers is the interim head coach.

This has not been a good few months for major college football. Schools like Ohio State, U-S-C, and Miami have run afoul of the NCAA. That’s also the case at UNC-Chapel Hill, where football coach Butch Davis was fired just before practice began, and school officials will face the NCAA infractions committee in October.

While this environment would seem to make college presidents run from big-time football, one UNC system school is running toward it.

Withers Makes History

Jul 29, 2011
Everett Withers

Everett Withers is the new interim head football coach at North Carolina. Withers, Chancellor Holden Thorp and athletic director Dick Baddour addressed the media earlier today.

Withers replaces Butch Davis, who was fired on Wednesday. Withers is the first African-American head football coach in school history - and just the second black head coach in any sport.
