9/11 Memorial Events Around North Carolina

NC Veterans Affairs and American Legion 9/11 Remembrance

8:15 a.m., corner of Saunders St. and N. Salem St., Apex

NCDVA Director Ilario Pantano, a former US Marine and witness to the attacks, will give remarks and introduce Speaker Pro Tempore of the NC House of Representatives Skip Stam.  Representative Stam, also a former US Marine, will headline the ceremony and speak to the events of 9/11 and the courage of past, present and future generations of Americans.

Pittsboro Memorial Will Honor 9/11 First Responders

New York Fire Department Deputy Chief Joseph Curry calls for rescue teams at Ground Zero three days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Pittsboro will break ground today on a memorial to 9/11 first responders. 

Organizers say town and Chatham County officials will take part, along with anyone who wants to bring a shovel. 

The site will feature a beam from the base of one of the twin towers that collapsed after the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. 

Jody Allen is the president of the Chatham County First Responders Foundation Corporation.  He said the beam will point from the site in downtown Pittsboro toward ground zero in New York City.

Governor Pat McCrory has ordered all flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday.

Chatham County Seeks Input on 9/11 Memorial

Officials in Chatham County are welcoming public input on a proposed site for a 9/11 memorial. The centerpiece will be a small part of the World Trade Center donated by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Citizens can weigh in at the Board of Commissioners meeting tonight in Pittsboro. Debra Henzey is the director of communications for Chatham County. She says one possible site is in the center of town.

NC Remembers 9-11

People across the country remembered the victims of 9-11 yesterday. In North Carolina, the ceremonies took many forms and were held in many communities.

Firefighters gathered near the airport in Morrisville to remember fellow first responders killed at the World Trade Center. They did it by climbing and walking the equivalent of 110 stories, while wearing photos of their fallen colleagues around their neck.

And later, the North Carolina Symphony gave a special performance at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh.

NC Couple Remembers 9/11

Ten years ago, a well-known U-N-C Chapel Hill Economist and his wife found themselves in the middle of the 9-11 attacks.   They were staying at the Marriott Hotel between the World Trade Center towers – attending an Economics Conference.  Jim Smith and Linda Topp had been married just five weeks earlier.
