No More Pre-Registration Puts Youth Vote In Question

State Board Of Elections To Hear Disputed Local Cases

Local County Board of Elections meetings are usually quiet, lightly attended affairs. But in Watauga and Pasquotank Counties, recent meetings have been acrimonious and highly partisan.

Last month, the Watauga County Board of Elections moved a polling site off of the Appalachian State University campus. Across the state, the Pasquotank County Board of Elections denied a college student a chance to run for local office. Both decisions were decried by Democrats as efforts to suppress the votes of young people. Since this spring, all local Boards of Elections are Republican-majority.

State Senate Moves Toward Sweeping Election Changes

If you plan to vote in a future election in North Carolina, the Voter Information Verification Act – if it passes – affects you. That goes double if you are a younger voter, don’t have a driver’s license, like to vote early, or may ever be subject to a random challenge of your status as a voter.

State Elections Board Looking For Discrepancies

The state Board of Elections is investigating voter registration work done by a firm hired by the Republican party. The national G-O-P fired Strategic Allied Consulting after irregularities were found in some Florida registration forms. The state Republican party has also terminated its relationship with the firm. The company says on its website that problems were traced to one person. Gary Bartlett is executive director of the state Board of Elections. He says the Board is checking several advocacy groups who register voters.
