UNC Report Acknowledges Fraudulent Classes

A UNC Board of Governors panel says it agrees with most of the findings from an earlier investigation of academic fraud at UNC-Chapel Hill.

A report from the board's Academic Review Panel says instructors in the African and Afro-American Studies Department gave few or no lectures in more than 200 registered classes dating back to 1997.  The panel says the department's former chairman Julius Nyang'oro and his assistant failed to report many of the suspicious classes to university administrators.

Those findings fall largely in line with an outside investigation from former Gov. Jim Martin.  That report concluded that student-athletes did not gain an unfair advantage from the fraudulent classes.

The Board of Governors panel says it found no evidence that professors guided athletes to the irregular classes.  But they admit they can not rule out that possibility
