A $5 billion global tech company announced today that it's expanding its operations in Wake County. Now, the company plans to create more than 1,237 new jobs in Cary.
HCL Technologies is an India-based information technology company. They cover a huge range of services, from equipment manufacturing to airline transport logistics, to energy utility billing.
Rajiv Sodhi is the chief workforce competitive officer at HCL. He says they were looking for a place to centralize service for customers on the east coast.
HCL chose Cary from among 20 cities in six states. Sodhi says the Triangle was ideal because of the pool of tech professionals and training centers, the high standard of living, and access to a major airport.
HCL will be hiring engineers, programmers, manufacturing workers and customer service personnel. The new jobs are expected to pay an average of about $52 thousand dollars per year. That's $2,000 above the local average.
HCL was awarded 5 million dollars in state incentives in 2008 and had a decade to claim the full benefits.
State Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker said in a statement that North Carolina has worked hard to attract IT companies, and she expects more companies like HCL will choose to expand here soon.
