Triangle Transit will present its latest plans this week for a stretch of the light rail line that would connect Orange and Durham Counties.

The organization hosts public meetings in Chapel Hill Wednesday and Durham on Thursday to focus on the stretch of light rail line connecting UNC Hospitals with the Duke and VA hospitals.

Spokesman Brad Schulz says the plan addresses local communities' locations, zoning and environmental concerns.

"How would bicycles connect? How would our streets and highways be able to connect? What type of land use and zoning do we have in place? What are the impacts to businesses we have along the rail line?"

Triangle Transit has created an updated "fly-through" video to illustrate plans for the route:

Residents can see plans for the line at these meetings, give feedback and ask questions, Schultz says.

"The public has been an important key in helping us plan this project for them and for the needs of the community," he said. "And we hope that folks will be able to turn out this month to continue to help us in the process."

In June, Triangle Transit will present the rest of the 17-mile light rail line plan that continues into downtown and eastern Durham. The Orange-Durham light rail line is expected to be operational by 2025.

Schulz says Wake County is still studying its public transportation needs and expect to have a plan regarding buses and a potential rail project later this year.
