N.C. Department Of Labor Falls Short In Helping Unpaid Workers

Chuck Liddy
/
News and Observer

It is the responsibility of the N.C. Department of Labor to protect the rights of workers.

But a new report from the News & Observer finds that state investigators for the department did not collect $1 million in wages that were owed to 617 workers in 2014.

Host Frank Stasio talks with News & Observer investigative reporter Mandy Lockeabout the reasons why the state has not helped hundreds of workers find financial compensation.

Charlie Shelton-Ormond is a podcast producer for WUNC.
Longtime NPR correspondent Frank Stasio was named permanent host of The State of Things in June 2006. A native of Buffalo, Frank has been in radio since the age of 19. He began his public radio career at WOI in Ames, Iowa, where he was a magazine show anchor and the station's News Director.
