Lawmakers Wrap Up Session

State lawmakers have wrapped up their short legislative session this week.

Republican lawmakers originally hoped to pass as many as three bills attempting to change the state constitution. But only the Defense of Marriage act succeeded. Now voters will go to the polls in May of next year to decide whether North Carolina should ban same-sex unions in its constitution. Lawmakers also hoped to pass a measure limiting the number of terms their leaders serve and another preventing the governor from appointing members of the state board of education. But there wasn't enough support for those measures. Legislators also made small changes to a few bills passed earlier this year before adjourning until early November. They've reserved time to respond to hurricane relief and any issues related to the redistricting process.
