New Policy To Control Feral Cats In Wake County

In the past, Wake County euthanized all unwanted cats. But not anymore. The county is adopting a new approach to control its feral cat population.

Asma Khalid: Feral cats are unsocialized. They can't live indoors. This new policy allows private animal groups the right to trap, neuter, vaccinate and then return these alley cats to the outdoors.  The Wake Audobon Society opposes the plan. It fears more outdoor cats will mean fewer birds. But, Pam Miller says that's not true.

John Edwards Found Not Guilty On One Fraud Count; Mistrial Declared On Other Counts

John Edwards' campaign finance case ended in a mistrial. Jurors came back yesterday and acquitted the former senator and presidential candidate on one charge and said they were deadlocked on five others. WUNC's Jeff Tiberii has been covering the trial since it started more than a month ago, he joins us from our bureau in Greensboro.

Gaming Bill Tentatively Passes House

A bill that would introduce Las Vegas-style live gambling to the Eastern Cherokee reservation has tentatively passed the House. Governor Bev Perdue struck a deal with leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, but lawmakers must change state law in order for the arrangement to move forward. Republican Thomas West is a sponsor of the bill.

The findings of a new analysis are no surprise to anyone who's flipped on the TV recently, the Obama and Romney campaigns are saturating local airwaves. Three of the country's top ten political advertising markets are in North Carolina.

State House Committee Approves Budget Plan

House lawmakers have recommended budget changes that would ease funding reductions for public schools and give state employees a small bonus. The House Appropriations committee approved the more than 20 billion dollar proposed budget adjustment earlier today. Republican representative Harold Brubaker chairs the House appropriations committee.

Federal Agency Looking At Prepaid Cards

A federal agency is looking to better regulate prepaid cards. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau held a meeting in Durham yesterday.

Gurnal Scott: The CFSB says people who put money on prepaid cards don't know about charges to withdraw money or even get information on their accounts. The cards aren't attached to any bank. Durham resident Amy Matthews found out after trying to get to the money she put on a card.
