When Abdullah Antepli was growing up in Turkey in the 1970s and 1980s, it wasn’t acceptable to be religious. For decades, the Turkish government suppressed Islam in an effort to modernize the country. So pursuing a spiritual career never seemed like an option to Abdullah. But since then, Abdullah Antepli went on to become Wesleyan University’s first Muslim Chaplain and, this past July, he became Duke University’s first Muslim Chaplain. He joins host Frank Stasio to explain the complicated and contentious role of religion in Turkey and how he overcame his own family’s disapproval to pursue his calling in the spiritual world.
