Writer Lewis Shiner has had work released by nearly all the big New York publishing houses, including Bantam, Doubleday and Simon & Schuster. But his latest book, a collection of his short fiction from the last 30 years, is just out from Subterranean Press, a small company based in Michigan. Shiner says there's a lot to be said for working with a small press, especially for an author who wants a hand in every part of the creative process, from the font type to the cover art. He joins host Frank Stasio to talk about his long journey to becoming a successful science fiction and mystery writer, why literary "success" doesn't mean he can quit his day job at IBM and the tumultuous youth that influenced his career.
