From "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" of 1974 to the contemporary "Saw" franchise, horror films have been known to rake it in at the box office. The popularity of scary movies, particularly slasher flicks, can also reflect how mainstream society is feeling about itself. North Carolina State University film studies professor Maria Pramaggiore says the bloodier and more gruesome movies get, the more indication that society at large is unhappy. Pramaggiore spills her guts about horror films and culture to host Frank Stasio.
