Race has been a dividing factor in Siler City, North Carolina for generations, but the recent influx of Latino immigrants to the area has moved the conversation about race beyond black and white. Today, Latinos make up about half of Siler City's population. John Biewen, audio program director at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies, co-produced a new project called "Nuevo South" that highlights the changing demographics in Siler City and captures how residents of the tiny town are handling the cultural shifts. Biewen and Marcia Espinola, a Latino community advocate, join host Frank Stasio to talk about race, ethnicity, tradition and immigration in Siler City. Listen to "Nuevo South" in its entirety on WUNC at 11 a.m., then join us with your thoughts on "The State of Things" at noon. Listener Call-in at 877-962-9862.
