Dan Gerlach may not be a household name, but since his arrival in North Carolina in 1995, he has established a reputation as a watchdog for low-income and working people. He first came to North Carolina to start the State Budget and Tax Center in Raleigh, a nonprofit group that analyzes how the state's fiscal and economic policies will affect low-income populations. In 2001, he joined Governor Mike Easley's cabinet as his senior budget advisor. In September, Gerlach was named the new President of the Golden Leaf Foundation. He joins Frank Stasio to talk about the challenges of shaping the state's budget in financial crunch times, and how he combines economics and advocacy.
