Chinese leaders are billing the Beijing Olympics as the debut of a new world power. Billions have been spent reinventing and modernizing the country’s image, but what will the rest of the world see when the games begin next week? Host Frank Stasio gets two views of the new China with former Beijing journalist Scott Savitt, and Chinese politics expert Shelley Rigger, a professor at Davidson College. Plus, Duke University Archivist Karen Glynn discusses what we can learn from the Sidney D. Gamble Photograph Collection. The collection of photos from the renowned China scholar spans the years 1917 to 1932 and was recently digitized and archived online. Listener Call-In.
