From the mountain talk of Western Carolina to Ocracoke’s Brogue to the unique vernacular of the Lumbee Indians, the Tar Heel state is known for its vast array of dialects. Walt Wolfram, professor of English Linguistics at North Carolina State University, is an expert on those dialects and can make sense of their cultural significance. He joins host Frank Stasio to for a conversation about the places he’s been, the dialects he’s studied and how he fell in love with language.
