Scientists with Family Health International, a Durham-based research group, are in Vienna this week at the International AIDS Conference celebrating a breakthrough in the battle against HIV-AIDS. In a South African study partially led by FHI, a vaginal microbicide called tenofovir yielded encouraging results in protecting women from HIV. On today's show, host Frank Stasio talks to David Katz, a Duke University biomedical engineer, about the implications of the new study and the complications involved in helping women protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases.
