This summer, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is leading a research expedition
to study three German submarine wrecks off the coast of the Outer Banks. Recreational divers have been helping themselves to deep water souvenirs for
years. But, by documenting the ships’
deteriorating conditions, NOAA hopes to raise awareness about their cultural
and historical value. David Alberg, leader of the Battle
of the Atlantic project, talks about preserving North Carolina’s maritime heritage.
