Black and White

The historic Hayti neighborhood in Durham serves as the backdrop for the latest project from writer and graphic novelist Lewis Shiner.  In "Black and White" (Subterranean Press/2008), Shiner constructs a gripping mystery complete with family secrets, racial tensions, incest and murder. The book takes place in the decades before urban renewal, when Hayti was home to an affluent African-American population.  Author and Historian Brandon Winford also joins host Frank Stasio to talk about the book and the history of this unique community.
