When Gene Matthews was a law student at UNC, he took a class in health law mostly to impress his future wife. She was getting her degree in public health. Together they traveled to Micronesia and back to Washington to begin long careers in public health. After 25 years as the general council at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Gene Matthews has returned to North Carolina to work on cutting-edge public health law projects at the N.C. Institute for Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. Gene Matthews joins host Frank Stasio to talk about the history and future of public health in North Carolina and the country. This program originally aired on February 23, 2009.
