Barbara Stilwell grew up in Liverpool England. Her mother was a nurse, and Barbara swore she wouldn't become one too because the job seemed so hard. But the pull of service was strong and she followed her mother’s lead. As a public health nurse in her home country, she was frustrated until she discovered the world of nurse practitioners. She won a scholarship to study at UNC-Chapel Hill and took the nurse practitioner model of delivering health care back home. She's largely credited with "inventing" the job of nurse practitioners in England. Since then she's had an illustrious career in health care working on behalf of nurses all over the globe. Currently she is the Director of Technical Leadership for IntraHealth International, which is based in Chapel Hill. She joins host Frank Stasio to talk about the globalization of nursing, and the worldwide shortage of health care workers.
