Nearly thirty percent of North Carolina’s population suffers from a mental health or substance abuse disorder and the majority of those cases go untreated every year. In Eastern North Carolina, a region of the state plagued by rural poverty, access to clinical services for mental health patients is limited. Now, a group of college students at East Carolina University are doing their part to raise awareness about this important issue. They recently collaborated with men and women undergoing treatment at Hope Station, a behavioral health recovery center in Pitt County, to create a series of public service announcements. Hope Station peer facilitator Susan Hall and ECU students Lauren Peaden and James Gould join host Frank Stasio to talk about their creative project and their goal to get the word out about mental health services.
