When music video maker Steve Boyle relocated from New York City to Raleigh, he never expected to find a vibrant punk rock music scene similar to the one he was used to in the Big Apple. But, punk was huge in the early to mid-1980s when the drinking age was low and bands could make it big playing bars in the college towns of North Carolina's Triangle region. Some of those acts were so influential, contemporary groups like R.E.M. and Hootie & the Blowfish have credited them with providing the foundation for their sound. It's been a long time since the heyday of "Comboland," as the NC punk scene was known. But Boyle, now a documentary filmmaker, is committed to telling the story of Tar Heel bands like The Spongetones and Doc Holliday. He shares his experiences in Comboland with host Frank Stasio. Former bandmates, Terry Anderson and Dave Adams of The Faboulous Knobs, join the conversation as well.
