What’s the best way to describe North Carolina’s political climate? How about moderately conservative with a tradition of progressive populism? How else can you explain a state that was once represented by Jesse Helms and John Edwards at the same time? Journalist Rob Christensen attempts to sort out the confusing contradictions in North Carolina’s political history in his new book, “The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics” (UNC Press/2008).  Christensen, a columnist for the News & Observer, joins host Frank Stasio to share some of the events that shaped today’s inconsistent political landscape.

Rob Christensen's upcoming readings:

* Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, 7 p.m. April 10

* McIntyre's Fine Books, Fearrington Village. 11 a.m. April 19

* Regulator Bookshop, Durham, 7 p.m. April 28

* Barnes & Noble, Cary, 7 p.m. May 13

* Barnes & Noble, Brier Creek Parkway, Raleigh, 7 p.m. May 22
