UNC-Asheville journalism professor Dan Pierce had his doubts about NASCAR's bootlegging origins. But it turns out the nation’s biggest spectator sport really did start with a bunch of moonshiners souping up their Chevys to beat the law. His new book, "Real NASCAR: White Lightning, Red Clay and Big Bill France" (UNC Press/2010) is a thorough examination of the stock car racing circuit’s wild early days and its spread from south of the Mason-Dixon line to outside well beyond U.S. borders.
