Sweet Crude

For decades, the impoverished native people of the Niger Delta have watched their government and multinational companies take the oil from beneath them while leaving pollution and degradation in their wake. Filmmaker Sandy Cioffi went to Niger to make a movie about a library opening, but found herself compelled to dig deeper by the stories of the villagers and the rebels. Her film, "Sweet Crude," goes behind the incendiary headlines to give a voice to the natives who have been pushed to violence in an effort to keep their land and their way of life from being destroyed. The film debuts at Full Frame on Saturday. Sandy Cioffi talks with host Frank Stasio today.
