Lionel Shriver grew up in Raleigh and meticulously rendered her early life there in her fifth novel, "A Perfectly Good Family." Four novels later she is taking on the American health care system and the distinctly American aversion to death in "So Much for That" (Harper Collins/2010). Set in New York City during 2005 and 2006, the book follows two families embroiled in medical madness. One is battling a slow cancer, the other a rare genetic disorder. Author Lionel Shriver comes home to Raleigh to read next week but first she speaks with host Frank Stasio about modern medicine's miracles, mishaps and massive failures.
