Today, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine released its recommendations for improving the state’s substance abuse services system. Few of the 32 recommendations surprised Eric Elbogen. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UNC's School of Medicine, and has a joint appointment at the Veterans Hospital in Durham. He just returned from a conference in San Antonio where he presented the findings of a longitudinal study on the connection between mental illness and violence. The study found, among other things, that substance abuse may play the biggest role in determining if a mentally ill person will be violent. Eric Elbogen joins host Frank Satsio to talk about predicting and preventing violence.
