In the past eight years, the number of young children diagnosed with bipolar disorder has risen dramatically. The PBS show “Frontline” and The New Yorker magazine have drawn attention to this alarming public heath issue, raising questions such as: Is bipolar more common than we thought or is it being over-diagnosed? And are children being over-medicated as a result? Dr. John March, a professor of psychiatry and chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center, and Dr. Eric Youngstrom, a psychologist at UNC-Chapel Hill who leads a center for research and treatment of bipolar disorders, join host Frank Stasio to discuss pediatric bipolar disorders.
