Sarah Hicks took the podium this past weekend for her classical debut with the North Carolina Symphony in her new role as associate conductor. She is among a new generation of female conductors and of artists unafraid to bend the customs of the classical music world. Hicks is as fluent in the Top 40 pop charts as she is in Franz Liszt’s tone poems and she has become well-known for booking unconventional stars at pops performances. This past Halloween she even mounted the podium dressed as Cher with guest performer Ben Folds playing the part of Sonny. She joins host Frank Stasio to discuss the changing economics of symphony orchestras and to share her ideas for drawing new and different audiences to the performance hall.
