Senator No

Senator Jesse Helms inspired deep passions in people on both sides of the aisle.  To some, he was an inspired leader of a new modern conservative movement who fought profligacy in government and in the culture.  To others, he was a polarizing figure who used race and homophobia to help further his political career, provoking the very worst in people.  Helms has been out of the public eye since 2005, but a new book and a documentary about his career are refocusing attention on the Senator from North Carolina.  William Link, author of "Righteous Warrior: Jesse Helms and the Rise of Modern Conservatism", and John Wilson, director and producer of "Senator No: Jesse Helms" join host Frank Stasio to discuss Helms' life and legacy.  Also joining the discussion will be NPR's Adam Hochberg who covered Helms in the 1990s. All audio clips in this segment are from the documentary: "Senator No: Jesse Helms"
