Strange Beauty Film Festival

Strange Beauty Film Festival

strangebeauty.org

A new film festival is out to prove that beauty can be found in the strangest places. There's the story of a man who adopted a crow as a family pet, a woman who turns trash into public art, and the wild imagination of a young boy reluctant to face reality. These images and many more come together at the Strange Beauty Film Festival in Durham. Its organizers, Jim Haverkamp and Joyce Ventimiglia, as well as a few of the contributing filmmakers join guest host Laura Leslie to talk about capturing the world in all its terrible glory.

MegaWatt Solar

MegaWatt Solar

When UNC astrophysicists Chris Clemens and Chuck Evans teamed up with UNC computer scientist Russ Taylor to found a solar company, they weren't thinking of powering your house, they were thinking of powering your utility company. MegaWatt Solar is a start up in Hillsborough, with backing from a Norwegian company and lots of traction at home. They've designed a modular solar shrub that tracks the sun and can stow itself during high winds. They're hoping a forest of these shrubs will be the answer to powering America's growing need for electricity. Guest host Laura Leslie speaks with Clemens, Evans and Taylor and finds out how their academic careers inform their entrepreneurial success.

But, her profession has repeatedly led her back to her roots as she works to help rural farmers in their struggle for social and economic justice. Carlton-LaNey is also the author of "African-Americans Aging in the Rural South," a book that paints a beautiful portrait of the traditions of farm communities and describes the need for the people in these communities to be recognized by the mainstream. Obama in NC: The Path to History

North Carolina was considered a game changer in the 2008 presidential election. When the state elected Democrat Barack Obama to office, journalist Cash Michaels rejoiced. Then, he wondered how a state with a history of racial violence and systemic discrimination evolved into one that elected the first African-American president. Michaels went to work researching North Carolina's racial politics and collecting interviews with scholars and witnesses to history who helped him chart the state's trajectory. He joins host Frank Stasio to talk about his new documentary film, "Obama in NC: The Path to History," and why North Carolina was poised to change its political landscape in 2008.
