by Frank Stasio and Susan Davis
Sales of pictures books are down, as are the number of picture books published each year. However, circulation of picture books from libraries is up. Is it the recession affecting the numbers or anxious parents pushing their kids to read increasingly difficult material? What do kids learn from picture books? What do they learn from being read to? And how do picture books work on the developing brain? To answer these questions and more, host Frank Stasio is joined by an panel of experts on the subject of picture books and literacy including Karin Michel, the head of youth services at the Chapel Hill Public Library; Charna D’Ardenne a doctoral student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Education; David Teague, the author of “Franklin’s Big Dreams” (Disney Hyperion/2010); Gary Feng, a research scientist with the School of Education at the University of Michigan; and Susie Wilde, a columnist and book reviewer.
