The Pew Research Center released its annual State of the Media report for 2012, and television news viewership is down. Political coverage has declined, and on local TV news, 40 percent of the content is made up of traffic, sports and weather. Meanwhile, newspaper newsrooms in 2012 employed 40,000 people, the smallest number of full-time journalists since 1978.

North Carolina First State To Eliminate Federal Unemployment Benefits

The North Carolina General Assembly recently decided to implement cuts to unemployment benefits as well as the maximum number of weeks one can receive unemployment funds. But altering unemployment benefits before the end of 2013 means North Carolina has been disqualified from receiving federal unemployment funding.

One bill passed the House yesterday and will move to the Senate.

Perdue Speaks Out At MLK Event

Events to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. have been held across the state today. One of the largest was the Triangle Interfaith Prayer Breakfast this morning.

The two-hour event was broadcast on WRAL TV and featured remarks by Governor Bev Perdue. She praised King's passion and vision and speculated that King, if he was alive, might have an issue with some current efforts in the State Legislature.
