The NCAA Tournament Takes On A Distinct Triangle Flavor This Year

Four North Carolina universities -- all located in the Triangle -- have earned bids to this year's National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.  The highest seed is Duke.  The Blue Devils are third in the Midwest region.  But the Atlantic Coast Conference runner-up will open tournament play against Mercer University at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Friday. North Carolina Central University is making its first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.  The Mid Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champions are seeded 14th in the East region.  They will put a 20-game win streak on the line against third-seed Iowa State Friday in San Antonio.

UNC-Duke Rivalry Heats Back Up After Snow Day

Rivals Duke and UNC Basketball will face off Thursday after winter weather canceled their last match-up.

Last week's winter storm canceled the men's basketball game between fierce rivals North Carolina and Duke. 

Meetings between coaches, athletic directors and the Atlantic Coast Conference resulted in the contest being rescheduled for this Thursday night in Chapel Hill.  That means both teams will be playing four games in eight days. 

The Tar Heels beat Pittsburgh over the weekend while the Blue Devils got past Maryland.  Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told Sirius-XM it's a challenging week.

Whistleblower Calls For Reform In Educating Athletes At UNC

Mary Willingham is a polarizing name in Chapel Hill these days. The academic advisor at UNC says a majority of football and men’s basketball players are woefully underprepared for the college classroom. University administrators dispute those claims. As the credibility of Willingham’s findings has been called into question, she’s asking how universities can better educate these young men.

The worlds of academics and big-time athletics often operate independently with little overlap. In recent weeks at UNC the two have converged, or maybe more accurately, collided.

Another Indictment In UNC Football Scandal

A second indictment has come out in the UNC football scandal. Georgia based sports agent Terry Watson was in Orange County Court Wednesday. He is alleged to have provided improper benefits to former UNC football players with the hope of later signing them as clients. Documents allege Watson funneled more than 18-thousand dollars to wide receiver Greg Little and gave cash and gifts to defensive lineman Marvin Austin. The agent is charged with 13 counts of athlete-agent inducement – a felony, and one count of obstruction of justice.

Triangle College Football Teams Try To Bounce Back

The UNC football team faces off this weekend against in-state rival East Carolina.  North Carolina has won 12 of 15 all-time games against the Pirates from Greenville, but that won't dampen the pride that each squad will bring into the game at Chapel Hill.  Tar Heels head coach Larry Fedora says the game puts old friends and foes back on the same field.

New Report Seeks Academic-Athletic Balance At UNC-Chapel Hill
