Duke Football to Play its First Bowl Game in 18 Years

Duke's football team is playing in a bowl game for the first time in 18 seasons. The Blue Devils meet Cincinnati tomorrow evening in Charlotte.

Duke hasn't been to college football's version of the post-season since 1994, and they haven't won a bowl game since New Year's Day 1961. That Blue Devil squad beat Arkansas 7-6. Head coach David Cutcliffe says:

"I want them to feel a sense of history as they play here because the history does indicate some tough times, but it also represents the best of the best."

WSSU Plays For Division II Football Championship

Winston-Salem State University is playing in the Division II football national championship tomorrow against Georgia's Valdosta State.

Winston-Salem State had been transitioning to Division I athletics, but the school did an about face two years ago because the move was too costly. Some supporters were upset that the Rams wouldn't become a Division I member. Head Coach Connell Mayor says his undefeated football team has provided a solution.

U.S. Figure Skating Championships Returning to Greensboro

Greensboro has been selected as the site of the 2015 US Figure Skating Championships. This competition came to Greensboro – and North Carolina – for the first time in 2011, following an Olympic year. In 2015 US Figure Skating’s largest event will return to the state, a year after the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Greensboro Coliseum General Manager Matt Brown.

Matt Brown: "This is a significant accomplishment for Greensboro. Many within the sport of figure skating questioned, how well figure skating championship would fare in the south. Boy, didn’t we surprise them."

NC State Fires Football Coach

NC State has fired its head football coach. Tom O’Brien won 40 games and lost 35 in six seasons leading the Wolfpack In a press conference last night, Director of Athletics Debbie Yow said one of the factors was the loss of revenue from football.

Triangle Braces For Long Hockey Lockout

Players, staff, and others who earn a living from professional hockey in the Triangle are bracing for a long, protracted labor dispute.  One year after the entire 2004-2005 season was lost due to the last contractual dispute between team owners and players, the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup.

Notre Dame To Join ACC

Atlantic Coast Conference

The Atlantic Coast Conference is adding a new member. Notre Dame will join the league in the next few years – as soon as it can get out of its current league, the Big East.  But Notre Dame’s most celebrated athletic program, football, isn’t coming with the other sports. Instead, the Fighting Irish football program will remain an independent, in order to retain its ability to negotiate its own TV contract. When Notre Dame eventually joins to ACC in all other sports, it will bring the number of conference members to 15 – and again expands the league’s geographic footprint.

Duke Olympians Return With Medals

A crowd gathered at Raleigh-Durham International Airport last night to greet members of the Duke University family returning with medals from the London Olympics.

Leoneda Inge:  Duke University is celebrating a bronze, a silver, and a gold medal from the Olympics.  Abby Johnston showed off her silver medal in synchronized diving.  She says the experience was better than she could have ever imagined.

Junior Nationals Groomed Duke Olympic Divers

The Olympic Games in London are wrapping up but not before more diving.  Nick McCrory of Chapel Hill is one of the top divers in the world and will be competing in the individual 10-meter platform competition today.  He has already captured a bronze medal at the games in synchronized diving.  McCrory is a student and trains at Duke University.  But before Duke and the Olympics,  McCrory competed in swimming competitions like the Junior Nationals which have been underway this week in Greensboro.

Media, UNC-CH Argue Over Cell Phone Records

Lawyers representing several media outlets and UNC-Chapel Hill argued today over what constitutes a public document. At the center of the case are the personal cell phone records of former football coach Butch Davis. Dave DeWitt reports.

Dave DeWitt: The media outlets contend that Davis was acting as a public official when he conducted the business of managing the UNC-Chapel Hill football program over his personal cell phone. Their attorneys argued today that that means those records should be public.
