North Carolina athletic director Dick Baddour has announced he's leaving his position a day after the university dismissed football coach Butch Davis. Baddour will officially step down after the school's hearing with the NCAA infractions committee in October. Baddour says he asked Chancellor Holden Thorp to hire a new athletic director in time to name a permanent head coach for the football team.

Butch Davis has been fired as the head football coach at North Carolina. Chancellor Holden Thorp made the announcement Wednesday after meeting with the Board of Trustees.

The decision comes just one week before the Tar Heels are scheduled to start fall practice – and two days after Davis met with reporters at the ACC’s annual media day.

Florida State has been picked to win the A-C football title this year. Media members made the Seminoles the favorite to win the championship over Virginia Tech.

The conference’s coaches are in Pinehurst today as part of the league’s media day. North Carolina’s Butch Davis spoke again about the scandal involving his program. He says the suspension of 14 players for all or part of last season brought the rest of the team together.

It’s been a difficult off-season for fans of NC State’s men’s basketball team. Alumnus Sidney Lowe was forced to resign as head coach in March. And last month, another former star, Lorenzo Charles, died in a bus accident.

On the court, the Wolfpack is trying to find its way under a new head coach. Mark Gottfried says he’s taking the team’s rebuilding effort one step at a time.

Player Sues UNC

A UNC Chapel Hill football player is suing the university in an attempt to be reinstated to the team.

A year ago, Michael McAdoo was a promising defensive end for the Tar Heels football team. But like 13 other teammates, he was swept up in a scandal involving benefits from an agent and academic misconduct. Seven players, including McAdoo, were suspended for the season. Earlier today, McAdoo’s attorneys filed a suit in Durham County Superior Court against UNC-Chapel Hill, saying he was improperly and unjustly suspended. McAdoo was found guilty by the university’s student honor court of one infraction of receiving improper academic benefits from a tutor. He was suspended from the school for one semester, but allowed to return this summer. The lawsuit seeks reinstatement to the team and also to prevent the NCAA from interfering. A hearing on that request will be heard on July 15th.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has released more documents compiled in its investigation into the football program. UNC

The North Carolina baseball team is heading to the College World Series for the fifth time in six years. The Tar Heels grabbed an early lead Saturday against Stanford and hung on through lousy weather to sweep the best of three series in the NCAA super regional. Head coach Mike Fox says his team earned another trip to Nebraska.

The Carolina Hurricanes are welcoming two new coaches to their staff. Former team captain Rod Brind’Amour and NHL head coach Dave Lewis will be assistant coaches for the team. Brind’Amour was appointed the team’s director of development last year after 20 years as an NHL player. Head Coach Paul Maurice says that year of experience will make Brind’Amour well suited for the job.

Sports equipment manufacturers meet with medical experts in Chapel Hill Thursday to consider ways to prevent sports concussions. The conference is meant to address research connecting concussions to dementia in retired athletes. A recent Wake Forest University study of football helmets says there is no helmet that can fully prevent concussions. But manufacturers have made progress in producing helmets that reduce the odds of a head injury. Robert Parish is the President and CEO of Jarden Team Sports, which owns the Rawlings brand of sports equipment.

"Snap. Spot. Kick away. High enough, long enough... It's good! It's good! Carolina has won the game on a 42-yard field goal by freshman Connor Barth. Good gosh girdy!"

That's sportscaster Woody Durham calling the game-winning play in North Carolina's 2004 upset win over Miami. Durham announced yesterday he will retire after 40 years of broadcasting Tar Heel football and basketball games.

N.C. State and Loyola University are discussing legal issues related to their common use of the Wolfpack mascot. Both schools have used the mascot since the early 20th century, but N.C. State registered a trademark in 1983.

This weekend Cary will host the nation’s largest round robin table tennis competition. More than 300 internationally ranked players will visit Cary for the event.

Mike Babuin is the founder of the Cary Table Tennis Association and creator of the competition. He says that while many Americans play table tennis at home, few consider it a serious sport. That’s not the case in other countries. And he says the countries taking table tennis seriously are the ones bringing home Olympic medals:

The UNC and Duke men’s basketball teams square off Saturday night in Chapel Hill with the regular season conference title on the line. Both teams are 13-and-2 in the ACC. Tar Heels coach Roy Williams calls Duke an “unbelievable opponent.”

College basketball's March Madness is about to engulf fans across the country. At Duke University, an engineering professor says the usual suspects will dominate the NCAA Tournament. And Adrian Bejan says that can be explained by his theory of Constructal Law. He says great basketball players tend to wind up at the same colleges and universities in the same way water flows to a single point through many small streams that join bigger and fewer river channels.

Rod Brind'Amour

Rod Brind'Amour will be honored tonight before the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Philadelphia Flyers. He will have his jersey retired.

Rod Brind'Amour was known as one of the hardest working and toughest players in a sport that places a high value on both. He attributes his drive to his father, a pipefitter in Campbell River, Canada.

One of the biggest rivalries in college basketball heats up as UNC visits Duke tonight in Durham. It’s the first match-up for the two teams this season and both of them are coming off blowout wins. The Tar Heels are playing perhaps their strongest basketball of the season, a trend that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski:
