'Canes Not Tough Enough in Home Opener

The Carolina Hurricanes remain winless after their home opener.  The 'Canes fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Raleigh Tuesday night, 4-1.  Jeff Skinner scored the only goal for Carolina during a power play in the second period.  But Tampa Bay put the game away in the third with two goals on Cam Ward.  The 'Canes goalie has allowed nine goals in his first two games this season.  Coach Kirk Muller says the team is still working on its chemistry.

NC State Student Rushes Court in Wheelchair, Featured on "Today" Show

An N.C. State student is a local celebrity after he stormed the basketball court in his wheelchair when the Wolfpack beat top-ranked Duke last weekend.  Senior Will Privette was one of the first students on the court Saturday.  Privette says he was thrown to the ground when the crowd converged.  But he continued celebrating after Wolfpack forward C.J. Leslie cleared the crowd and picked him up.  Leslie joined Privette on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday morning.

Carolina Hurricanes Gearing Up For Short NHL Season

Carolina Hurricanes fans are about a week away from welcoming their team back to the ice. Hockey owners and the N-H-L Players Association recently reached an agreement on collective bargaining which lifted a nearly four-month-long lockout. Players are now getting ready for a condensed season. Hurricanes' general manager Jim Rutherford says it's great to see the players skating again, but he hasn't lost sight of the others affected by the long lockout.

ECU Set for Saturday Bowl Game

East Carolina will conclude its football season today with a match-up against Louisiana Lafayette in the New Orleans Bowl.

Unlike almost every other major sport, college football has no playoff ending with dozens of games that are often sparsely attended and inconsequential. Proponents of the bowl system say it provides exposure for schools and a reward for the athletes.

NC State Meets Vandy in Music City

In college football, NC State plays Vanderbilt today in the Music City Bowl.

The Wolfpack entered the season with hopes of an ACC championship, but posted just a seven and five record, resulting in the firing of head coach Tom O'Brien. New coach Dave Doeren won't lead State in this game. That job goes to offensive coordinator Dana Bible. The interim coach says today is both a challenge and a building block.

Duke Football to Play its First Bowl Game in 18 Years

Duke's football team is playing in a bowl game for the first time in 18 seasons. The Blue Devils meet Cincinnati tomorrow evening in Charlotte.

Duke hasn't been to college football's version of the post-season since 1994, and they haven't won a bowl game since New Year's Day 1961. That Blue Devil squad beat Arkansas 7-6. Head coach David Cutcliffe says:

"I want them to feel a sense of history as they play here because the history does indicate some tough times, but it also represents the best of the best."

WSSU Plays For Division II Football Championship

Winston-Salem State University is playing in the Division II football national championship tomorrow against Georgia's Valdosta State.

Winston-Salem State had been transitioning to Division I athletics, but the school did an about face two years ago because the move was too costly. Some supporters were upset that the Rams wouldn't become a Division I member. Head Coach Connell Mayor says his undefeated football team has provided a solution.

U.S. Figure Skating Championships Returning to Greensboro

Greensboro has been selected as the site of the 2015 US Figure Skating Championships. This competition came to Greensboro – and North Carolina – for the first time in 2011, following an Olympic year. In 2015 US Figure Skating’s largest event will return to the state, a year after the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Greensboro Coliseum General Manager Matt Brown.

Matt Brown: "This is a significant accomplishment for Greensboro. Many within the sport of figure skating questioned, how well figure skating championship would fare in the south. Boy, didn’t we surprise them."

NC State Fires Football Coach

NC State has fired its head football coach. Tom O’Brien won 40 games and lost 35 in six seasons leading the Wolfpack In a press conference last night, Director of Athletics Debbie Yow said one of the factors was the loss of revenue from football.

Triangle Braces For Long Hockey Lockout

Players, staff, and others who earn a living from professional hockey in the Triangle are bracing for a long, protracted labor dispute.  One year after the entire 2004-2005 season was lost due to the last contractual dispute between team owners and players, the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup.
