NCSU Student Engineering A Solution

A student at NC State is hoping to solve a pervasive problem in developing countries.

Tate Rogers needed an idea for his senior engineering seminar class last spring. The assignment – use the Gates Foundation Grand Challenge guidelines to develop an idea to help dispose of human waste in developing countries.

His idea was simple: encase a hand-held auger in a pipe, so that one person could empty a latrine, instead of needing a huge, costly truck. Rogers won a $100,000 Gates grant and is now developing a prototype.

Cultural Immersion Classes for Soldiers

A team of professors at N.C. State is starting a program of language and culture classes for special operations soldiers. The Language Training Center will offer six-week intensive courses to prepare special ops members for deployment overseas. Program director Dwight Stephens says the classes are designed to bridge the gap between soldier and civilian.

I-Cubed Grows Despite Economy

It could take years to make-up for all the jobs lost since the Recession.  Since December 2007, North Carolina has lost more than 300-thousand jobs. President Barack Obama says “Innovation” is the key to NEW economy jobs.

Pres. Barack Obama:  "We know what we have to do to create jobs right now.  And create jobs in the future.  We know that if we want businesses to start here and stay here and hire here, we’ve got to be able to out build and out educate and out innovate every country on earth!"

President Obama Fires Up NC State Crowd

President Barack Obama was in campaign-mode during his stop at N-C State University yesterday.   His jobs speech was more like a re-election campaign speech.   There was chanting, cheering and waving – and Mr. Obama didn’t mind the attention at all.  

The mood in Reynolds Coliseum was patriotic.

President Touts Jobs Bill at NC State

President Barack Obama spoke to thousands of people on the North Carolina State Campus this afternoon. The president is promoting his 450-billion dollar jobs bill. He told the crowd the bill would provide money for important infrastructure projects.

President Obama:  "In North Carolina alone there are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be prepared. Four of them are near here, on the belt-line. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?"
