Officials say two prison employees were killed and several others injured at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City.

The northeast corner of North Carolina, or the Albemarle region, is commonly known as pass-through country for vacationers headed to Virginia or the Outer Banks.

Nearly one resident  in every five lives in poverty, and one in four is over the age of 60, according to local government statistics. Community members say a lack of economic and educational opportunity push and keep young people out.

ELIZABETH CITY — In the next few days, the last of an array of 104 wind turbines is expected to be hooked into the electrical grid, and North Carolina's largest wind farm — one of the biggest in the nation — will be complete.

Elizabeth City State University could drop several common degree programs such as history, political science, physics and philosophy. An ECSU faculty member, who asked not to be named, confirmed staff has been told several programs are on the chopping block.

Museum of the Albemarle and Gary Cooper

People often turn to history books to learn about bygone eras, but a new exhibit at the Museum of the Albemarle showcases the value of postcards important cultural documents.  The exhibit contains old and new postcards that depict a variety of coastal North Carolina scenes: people on beaches, coastal transportation, architecture, and more. Some of the cards have even been altered to be viewed in 3-D. (Glasses are provided.)

Hopes and plans for a thriving Elizabeth City Air Park have not panned out over the past year.  Businesses have not been able to create the jobs they promised in this economy.
