The Durham community celebrated the life of Pauli Murray last evening. But this year the celebration marked the Episcopal Priest’s sainthood.

The City of Durham has struggled for decades to revitalize a section downtown near the Durham Freeway.  Today there is a groundbreaking to celebrate new plans for the area.

The Food Truck scene in Durham is credited with helping to grow the area’s image as a top food destination.  Durham officials are now trying to find a way to update its mobile vending code and keep the food truck business vibrant.

Leoneda Inge:  The City of Durham has been working on changes and updates to its 10-year-old mobile vending code for several months.  But when they announced those changes last week, the food truck community cried foul.  Grace Smith got a lot of those complaints.

The City of Durham is taking another look at its mobile vending rules.  And that means Food Trucks.

Leoneda Inge:  Becky Cascio and Mike Hackerd rolled out their Pie Pushers Food Truck about a year ago.  Cascio says it was a big step to make.

Becky Cascio:  My boyfriends a chef, he would love a restaurant but we’re not in a place in our personal lives, or financial or business knowing where we’re going to open a restaurant yet. So we saw this as a kind of stepping stone and Durham as a great spot to do it.

Xiu Xiu Always

The experimental pop band Xiu Xiu has been a fixture on the indie music scene for the past ten years. While they are not famous in the conventional sense, they have a strong cult following. Xiu Xiu has toured the world over and produced eight critically acclaimed albums, including their newest "Always.”

The Bulltown Strutters bring the street band traditions of New Orleans to their own home in Durham, NC. The 20-member group urges their audiences to join them in parade, dance, and merry-making.

He's the founder of The Monti, a local non-profit whose stated mission is to create community through the story-telling. For this collaboration with WUNC, Jeff sought out North Carolinians with personal stories to tell about the struggles that get in the way of a successful high school education.

Magnolia Grill Closing

One of the most well-respected restaurants in the Triangle is closing its doors. Magnolia Grill in Durham has been a culinary powerhouse for 25 years.

Leoneda Inge:  Most people got the word yesterday that the award-winning Magnolia Grill is closing its kitchen for good.  Nick Powell says his family has never had a bad dish at Magnolia Grill.

Nick Powell:  We’re pretty sad to see it go.  Emilee gasped when she read the news.

Emilee Powell:  It’s one of our favorite restaurants.

The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival begins today. Lovers of non-fiction cinema travel from all over the world to Durham to view this juried competition.

Leoneda Inge:  This is Full Frame’s 15th year.  As many as 12-hundred documentaries pour in from every corner of the globe.  Just over 100 films will be shown during the festival.  That’s a lot of films, ranging from “The Invisible War,” about rape in the military, to a family’s quest to eat local in Alabama.

The scientific concept of nano-technology became popular in the 1990s.  A conference this week in Durham focuses on the commercial applications of nano-technology.

Leoneda Inge:  Today kicks off a two-day Nanotech Commercialization Conference at American Tobacco in Durham.   John Hardin heads the office of Science and Technology at the North Carolina Department of Commerce, a sponsor of the conference.   He says there will be many researchers at the conference but also many business developers.

A judge has permanently removed Durham's district attorney from her post.

Durham will soon be home to some of North Carolina's first housing for homeless veterans with disabilities. The 10-unit complex near Northgate Mall will have affordable rents and will connect tenants with support services.

Jess Brandes is projects coordinator for CASA, the nonprofit developing the site. She says Durham has a lot of services for veterans because of the VA medical center there.

Several African-American historic sites across Durham are being considered for historic designation. Preservation officials say criteria include sites where significant events took place, buildings with architectural significance, and homes of prominent African-American families. Bob Ashley is the executive director of Preservation Durham. He says there are quite a few contenders for designation.

The Durham Public Schools will delay a major overhaul of its magnet system. The announcement was made earlier today by Superintendent Eric Becoats.

A non-profit that supports new mothers in Durham County is getting a boost from President Obama's healthcare measure. Healthy Families Durham will use a $320,000 grant to support new families in east Durham. Program Director Jan Williams says they'll be providing home visits for two reasons.
