Duke Blue Devils

The men's basketball teams from UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University battle each other tonight for the 239th time.

The storied rivalry is notorious for dividing friends, family and coworkers over which shade of blue is best.

But in a rare collaboration, Tar Heel sportswriter Art Chansky and Blue Devil sports marketer Johnny Moore chronicled the history of the rivalry in the book, The Blue Divide (Triumph Books/2014).

Host Frank Stasio talks with Chansky and Moore about the Tobacco Road rivalry that many call the greatest in sports.

North Carolina and Duke continue their storied rivalry in men's basketball tonight.

But tonight's match-up in Durham comes 11 days after the passing of legendary UNC coach Dean Smith.  Many Duke fans are expected to wear dark blue t-shirts with the name "Dean" in the place of "Duke."

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski is now a win shy of career victory one thousand.

The Blue Devils topped Pitt 79-65 last night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Afterward, Coach K downplayed any special meaning for win 999.

"It means we’re 16-and-two. That’s exactly what that means," Krzyzewski says. "And hopefully we can be 17-and-two in the next game we play."

Krzyzewski has more wins than any college basketball coach in men's history. Duke's next game is in New York against St. John's on Sunday.

Number 24 Duke and North Carolina are getting ready for their annual football rivalry matchup.

The Tar Heels host the Blue Devils on Saturday in the final game of the regular season.  There's a lot at stake for Duke, which needs the win to advance to the ACC championship game against Florida State.  It would be the school's first trip to the title game.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe says it's fitting that the deciding game is against UNC.

"It's enough that it's just Duke and North Carolina," Cutcliffe says.

The Duke men's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit to beat Syracuse 16-10 for its second national title.  The Blue Devils began Monday's game by missing their first 11 shots on goal.  That allowed the Orange to race out to a 5-nothing lead into the second quarter.

Duke head coach John Danowski said he felt the pressure of the game was a factor.

Men's Tournament

No. 2 seed Duke heads to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Creighton, 66-50. North Carolina exits the tournament at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks for the second straight year.

Five North Carolina teams made the NCAA men's basketball tournament, including the ACC's Big Three in the Triangle.

Duke is a number 2 seed in the Midwest region and faces Albany Friday afternoon.

"We're excited with the position we're in," forward Ryan Kelly tells GoDuke.com.

"We've got some time to prepare and every team we face from this point on is capable of being us and we're certainly capable of beating them.  That's how we have to approach it.  A loss is the end of your season, so we just have to keep winning."

No. 3 Duke suffered an upset loss Thursday night at the hands of Virginia, 73-68.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski said his team was focused on the matchup despite their preparation for no. 5 Miami this weekend.

"Virginia just played great.  They were terrific tonight," Krzyzewski said.

"They had our full attention and preparation for this.  They beat us when we were trying to be at our best and it's because of them that we were not."

The Blue Devils got 28 points from Seth Curry.  All but five of those came in the second half.

An N.C. State student is a local celebrity after he stormed the basketball court in his wheelchair when the Wolfpack beat top-ranked Duke last weekend.  Senior Will Privette was one of the first students on the court Saturday.  Privette says he was thrown to the ground when the crowd converged.  But he continued celebrating after Wolfpack forward C.J. Leslie cleared the crowd and picked him up.  Leslie joined Privette on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday morning.

Duke's football team is playing in a bowl game for the first time in 18 seasons. The Blue Devils meet Cincinnati tomorrow evening in Charlotte.

Duke hasn't been to college football's version of the post-season since 1994, and they haven't won a bowl game since New Year's Day 1961. That Blue Devil squad beat Arkansas 7-6. Head coach David Cutcliffe says:

"I want them to feel a sense of history as they play here because the history does indicate some tough times, but it also represents the best of the best."
