Levon Helm is best known for being the drummer in the music group, “The Band,” but he had a long career after they broke up. He even fought his way back into musical shape after quitting for a time due to throat cancer. He finally succumbed in 2012, but not before filmmaker Jacob Hatley had a chance to film a documentary, “Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm.”

Its Triangle premiere is at the Chelsea Theater in Chapel Hill on June 28.

What happens when a writer, a musician and a photographer get together for a one-time performance at the Casbah in Durham? You'll have to show up to Professor Diablo's True Revue tonight at 8 p.m. to find out.

It's the brainchild of Durham writer Eric Martin. He got together with a friend at Duke's Center for Documentary Studies, and they realized that they didn't see many cross-disciplinary performances in the area. They started bringing together area artists for these unique performance.

Elizabeth Spencer’s most famous book is called “The Light in the Piazza.”  It’s the story of an American girl who falls in love with a man in Italy.  And it’s been adapted to a movie and a stage musical.  But Elizabeth has created a large body of work, though none is quite so famous. There’s a new documentary based on Elizabeth Spencer’s life called “Landscapes of the Heart: The Elizabeth Spencer Story.”

Bill Hayes is the founder of Figure 8 Films, a Carrboro production company which created hits like "Jon & Kate Plus 8," "Nineteen Kids and Counting," and "Sister Wives."

Hayes grew up on a chicken, tobacco and dairy farm in the quiet town of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. When colleagues and friends told him he was crazy for starting a production company in North Carolina, he said, "why not?" Bill Hayes joins host Frank Stasio to discuss his success as a documentarian, producer and director.
