ACC Football Kicks Off

College football fans will be flocking to Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh this weekend. UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, and N-C State will hold their season opening games.

It’s been a tumultuous off-season for major college football programs. And no program has been under more scrutiny than Carolina, for everything from parking tickets to academic integrity issues.

Tomorrow, the team finally takes the field. Everett Withers is the interim head coach.

UNC Charlotte Is (Getting) Ready For Some Football

This has not been a good few months for major college football. Schools like Ohio State, U-S-C, and Miami have run afoul of the NCAA. That’s also the case at UNC-Chapel Hill, where football coach Butch Davis was fired just before practice began, and school officials will face the NCAA infractions committee in October.

While this environment would seem to make college presidents run from big-time football, one UNC system school is running toward it.

Sports Scandal and Citizen Journalism

While North Carolina State University fans uncovered plagiarism on the part of a football player from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, it was the News & Observer that double checked the story and gave it mainstream media play. UNC journalism professor Adam Hochberg says that this combination of citizen and professional journalists has its pros and cons. Hochberg and WUNC reporter Dave DeWitt join guest host Isaac-Davy Aronson to consider whether we are better for it when citizens become journalists and journalists carry on the work of those citizens.

Player Sues UNC

Michael McAdoo

A UNC Chapel Hill football player is suing the university in an attempt to be reinstated to the team.

A year ago, Michael McAdoo was a promising defensive end for the Tar Heels football team. But like 13 other teammates, he was swept up in a scandal involving benefits from an agent and academic misconduct. Seven players, including McAdoo, were suspended for the season. Earlier today, McAdoo’s attorneys filed a suit in Durham County Superior Court against UNC-Chapel Hill, saying he was improperly and unjustly suspended. McAdoo was found guilty by the university’s student honor court of one infraction of receiving improper academic benefits from a tutor. He was suspended from the school for one semester, but allowed to return this summer. The lawsuit seeks reinstatement to the team and also to prevent the NCAA from interfering. A hearing on that request will be heard on July 15th.
