Earlier this week, President Obama awarded Chapel Hill historian Anne Firor Scott the National Humanities Medal.

She was honored "for pioneering the study of southern women. Through groundbreaking research spanning ideology, race, and class, Dr. Scott’s uncharted exploration into the lives of southern women has established women’s history as vital to our understanding of the American South."

Diane Rehm was awarded the 2013 National Humanities Medal Monday. The awards recognize  "outstanding achievements in history, cultural studies, filmmaking, cultural commentary, and historic preservation."

Recipients are selected by the President of the United States in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Humanities:

WUNC has won four 2014 Edward R. Murrow awards, including the coveted "Overall Excellence" award for large market radio stations in our region (which includes KY, NC, SC, TN, & WV).  It's the fourth year in  a row that the station has taken home top honors. The prizes are awarded by the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Three individual stories received recognition, two reported by Dave DeWitt and one by Leoneda Inge.

At a ceremony at the White House Wednesday, President Obama awarded former UNC basketball coach Dean Smith the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The president bestowed the nation's highest civilian honor on a class of recipients including civil rights activist Bayard Rustin and women's rights advocate Gloria Steinem.  Smith was lauded not just for his many athletic achievements, but also for his impact on the community he calls home.

WUNC won four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in the 2013 Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) contest, including the overall excellence award for our region (which includes KY, NC, SC, TN, & WV).

RTDNA has 14 regions and only two other public radio stations in the country won the overall excellence award in their region – WBEZ in Chicago and WLRN in Miami. The awards recognize work of the highest quality produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world.
